Mwense District Commissioner (DC) Victor Kasuba says the district is not spared with the smuggling of mealie meal to the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC).

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Mwense, Mr Kasuba said Kashiba border is porous and mealie meal can cross anytime.

He said Mansa – Kashikishi road is along the Luapula River which borders Zambia with the DRC, adding that trucks can offload the commodity any time and smuggle it into Congo.

Mr Kasuba, however, said police in the area have intensified their patrols to curb smuggling of the commodity.

He added that police have so far arrested some smugglers and impounded the commodity destined for the DRC.

The DC was however quick to mention that the district has no shortage of mealie meal as most dealers have the merchandise in stock.
