DEC arrests 48 year old Luwingu man for cultivating 2.1 tonnes of cannabis

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a 48 year old man of Luwingu district for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing more than two tonnes.

 

Cravel Kabwela, 48, of Mipini village in Luwingu district has been arrested for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants intercropped with maize.

 

The cannabis weighed 2.1 tonnes.

 

This is according to a press statement made available to ZANIS by DEC Deputy Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo in Lusaka today.

Ms. Katongo stated that the suspect was apprehended after an operation which was conducted in Nchelenge, Luwingu and Mwense districts.

 

She said 20 other suspects were arrested for cultivating and trafficking in over 180 kilogrammes of cannabis during the same operation.

 

Meanwhile, Ms. Katongo has disclosed that over the weekend, the commission arrested a total of 51 people countrywide for cultivating and trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.

 

He said those arrested include Wilfred Siavundu, 33 of Machechete village in Gwembe district, Green Kapitolo 48 of Kapitolo village in Mpongwe district and Kelvin Chisha of Chashela village in Mufulira district.

 

Ms. Katongo said others arrested are Shakuyumba Mombela, 41 of Bwina area in Western Province and Joyce Luzendu 36, of Mufulira district.

 

She said all the suspects will appear in court soon.
