Dr. Atanga said this in Nchelenge District yesterday when he toured government infrastructure at Kilwa Island on Lake Mweru.

He said there is need for the business community in the country to take advantage of the high population of people on the Islands of Lake Mweru and Lake Bangweulu in Luapula Province.

Dr. Atanga said there is huge demand by the people in Luapula Province for safe and efficient water transport services.

The Permanent Secretary however called on the would-be investors to ensure that they follow all the safety procedures when they engage in the water transport business.

He said the business community should ensure that their water vessels are sea worthy before they are engaged to transport people, as well as goods.

And Director of Maritime in the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication, John Mwape said government has plans to procure a Water Vessel for Nchelenge District to ease the transportation of people and goods across Lake Mweru and the Luapula River.

Mr. Mwape said government is currently sourcing for funds, adding that the vessel will be procured as soon as funds are available.

Dr. Atanga who is accompanied by senior government officials in the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication was in Nchelenge to assess how best various water canals along the Luapula River and Lake Mweru could be worked on in order to ease movement of people.
