Govt to ensure food security in the country

 

Ndola, April 10, 2013, ZANIS ————– Government says it will ensure that there is food security in the country.

 

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock  Rodgers Mwewa said this when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province Minister Mwenya Musenge.

 

Mr Mwewa said his Ministry was happy with the lifting of the ban on maize and its products by Acting President Edgar Lungu but pointed out that exports will be done with proper documentations.

 

Mr Mwewa said there was need for serious monitoring and controlling exports of maize and its products to ensure that smuggling was curbed.

 

Mr Mwewa who is on the Copperbelt province with Home Affairs Deputy Minister Alfrida Kasembe  to check on the situation of mealie meal in the province said food security was vital in the nation.

 

He said it was the duty of the Ministry of Agriculture to know how much food there was in the country adding that Zambia cannot give out maize to its neighbours and leave the people in the country with nothing.

 

And Ms Kasembe said the police will continue to work around the clock to ensure that smuggling is curbed.
