————The government, through the Ministry of Education, has released KR 50,000 for sanitation at Chisenga Primary School in Nchelenge district of Luapula province.

This came to light during the first quarter District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) meeting held at the civic centre yesterday.

Nchelenge Acting District Administrative Officer Gift Hajongola told the meeting that the government has released the money to improve the sanitary condition which was in bad state at the island primary school.

Mr Hajongola was reacting to concerns by some members of the DDCC who wondered why the District Education Board Secretary’s (DEBS) office was not represented and wanted to know whether Chisenga Primary School on Lake Mweru has been re-opened.

Mr Hajongola said Chisenga Primary School has not re-opened this term after the district health inspectors declared it a life hazard and unfit for habitation of pupils just before the resumption of this term.

However, he was quick to say that the government, through the Ministry of Education has released KR 50,000 towards the construction of eight VIP toilets.

Meanwhile, Nchelenge District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Benny Mwansa, has confirmed the development in interview with Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS).

Mr  Mwansa said the money has been released through his office and that the tender process has since been completed, adding that works will soon commence.

Chisenga Primary School has a population of 855 pupils of which 108 and 51 are examination candidates for grade nine and seven respectively.

The DEBS, however, said grades one, two, seven and nine pupils were learning using the local church buildings as a short term measure.
