NGOCC commends Lumwana mining company

Solwezi, March 8, ZANIS —–Non Governmental Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has hailed Barrick Lumwana Mining Company (LMC) for the efforts it is making in implementing programmes aimed at eradicating poverty among women groups in Solwezi.

NGOCC Executive Director Engwase Mwale said it is encouraging that the mining firm is investing part of its funds into various programmes within its catchment areas as a way of empowering women.

Ms Mwale was speaking yesterday when she addressed various women organizations ahead of today’s International Women’s Day celebrations at Mutanda Community Hall in Solwezi whose theme is “Gender-Agender Gaining Momentum”.

She said there is need for various organizations to work together in finding solutions to the challenges women are facing in their quest to participate actively in the development of the country.

Ms Mwale said various stakeholders especially the private sector need to recommit themselves in ensuring that the Gender-Agenda in Zambia is achieved.

Ms Mwale appealed to other stakeholders in the private sector to emulate Barrick Lumwana Mining Company and come up with plans which will better the lives of women in Zambia.

And LMC Community Development Coordinator Christopher Mukala said the mining company has continued working hand in hand with women organizations in reducing poverty in communities.

Mr Mukala said the company will continue empowering the local women with economic programmes which include micro finance activities, raising their own income, farming activities and community health programmes.
