Kilwa Island in need of relief food

Nchelenge, Mar 4/13,  ZANIS——-Nchelenge District Commissioner Joseph, Chisakula, has called for food relief for Kilwa Island following a windy rain wave which hit the area and submerged the crops and drowned them permanently.

Mr Chisakula made the call on Friday, stating that maize, beans, rice, sweet potatoes and cassava were swept under the water irretrievably.

He said he had received reports of food insecurity in the area and sent a fact finding team which brought back a report confirming that the situation was serious.

The District Commissioner said he has since written to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) at the Provincial Office in Mansa for a quick response to the situation.

Mr Chisakula added that it was important for government, through the DMMU, to respond quickly because the people were in dire need of relief food following the reported tragedy that has affected food security on the Island.

He also appealed to well wishers to come to the aid of the people on Kilwa Island as the situation was serious.
