Swazi MTN league table toppers, Mbabane Swallows believe the prospects of facing South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions league first round will be the driving force for them to beat Zambia’s Zanaco FC.
The match between Swallows and Zanaco FC will take place on Sunday at the Somhlolo National Stadium, kick-off at 3pm.
The winner of the Swallows/Zanaco FC clash will face the winner of South Africa’s Orlando Pirates and Comoros’ Djabal match. The Soweto Buccaneers have one foot in the next stage after hammering the hapless Comoros side 5-0 in the first leg tie a fortnight ago.
Swallows coach, Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe says if the prospects of facing Orlando Pirates for the second time in the tournament does not inspire his side to win on Sunday then nothing will.
“We cannot run away from the fact that many people in Swaziland support South African teams especially Pirates and Chiefs and the players would like to test their skills against a team of Pirates calibre,” explains Hlophe after a vigorous afternoon training session on Thursday.
“To do so, they need to beat Zanaco. I have told them as much.”
But Swallows would have to overcome a 3-2 away first leg tie defeat they suffered in Lusaka and their record in the Champions league does not make for riveting reading.
The sad reality is that the red and white glamour giants have not won an international game since they started campaigning in the continental tournaments almost 30 years ago.
Their home record, for that matter, is uninspiring. The ‘Birds’ have actually fared better playing away from home, as they have managed credible draws against South Africa’s giants Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United respectively.
