DEC arrests Lusaka men with counterfeit K50,000 notes

The Drug Enforcement Commission in Eastern Province has arrested two male persons for being in possession of over K9 million counterfeit notes.

Drug Enforcement Commission Public Relations officer, Samuel Silomba, confirmed the development to ZANIS in a press statement in Lusaka today

Mr Silomba named the suspect as Emmanuel Phiri, 39, a businessman of Lusaka who has been arrested and jointly charged with Daniel Chongo, 32, also of Lusaka for being in possession of K50,000 (fifty thousand Kwacha) notes in old currency amounting to K9, 650, 000.

Meanwhile, in Central Province, the commission has arrested three peasant farmers of Luano District for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing over 1.6 tonnes.

The arrested include Joseph Chisenga, 52, a peasant farmer of Kampelembe area in Luano district for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 758kg.

Others are Whiskey Chibuye, 81, a peasant farmer of Luano district for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 600kg and Sinakabwene Kabunda, 38, a peasant farmer also of Luano for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 320kg intercropped in a cotton field.

Mr Silomba said others arrested by the commission in last five days include Stanely Chisenga, 44, of Ndaba village in Serenje district for trafficking in 43.2kg of cannabis, Musenge Chikokwelo, 68, of Samfya district for unlawful cultivation of 4.5kg of cannabis and Fredrick Katebe Mwape, 36, for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis.

He stated that all suspects will appear in court soon.
