Chief appeals for bridge reconstruction

Kabompo, February 20, ZANIS ——Chief Kalunga of the Luchazi speaking people in Kabompo district has appealed to government to complete construction of Maveve and Kalwilo bridges that were abandoned by contractors more than ten years ago.

The chief said school going children and expectant mothers are facing difficulties to cross Mumbeji and Kalwilo rivers from the western bank to access education and health services on the eastern side of the rivers when the rivers are flooded as the uncompleted bridges become impassable.

Chief Kalunga made the appeal in a press statement made available to ZANIS by Chikenge primary school PTA Chairperson, Isaac Makondo in Kabompo today.

He said the uncompleted bridges have also adversely affected agriculture activities because farmers are unable to ferry their farm produce to market or access farm inputs.

Chief Kalunga appealed to government to quickly bring in Zambia National Service (ZNS) to build the bridges because other contractors have failed his chiefdom.

He added that other bridges that need reconstruction include Chikonkwelo, Kasalya, and Likwava while Sampulu bridge need to be raised up because it is always submerged with water during floods.
