Govt helps 1017 families in Mkushi District

Mkushi, February 14, 2013, ZANIS — Government is reported to have assisted slightly over 1017 in Mkushi District under its Public Welfare Assistance Scheme (PWAS) last year.

Mr. Joseph Mayanga of Mkushi’s Social Welfare Office confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview, today.

He said that the beneficiaries had received various assistance from the K50,735,485 (KR 50,735.485) cumulative total PWAS funding for the year 2012.

 

Mr. Mayanga elaborated that out of these beneficiaries, 68 Males and 76 Females were aged above 65, whilst 21 males and 63 Females were in the Orphaned vulnerable Children (OVC)  bracket.

 

He said that in the category for Households headed by disabled persons, 55 Males and 56 Females received welfare assistance, whilst 77 Males and 72 Females benefited from PWAS in the under-22 Child Headed Household category.

 

He said that PWAS assistance also facilitated for the secondary school requirements of 18 male as well as 18 Female pupils.

 

Mr. Mayanga mentioned that assistance was also given to 8 Male and 4 Female ex-prisoners, whilst 42 Males and 38 Females had benefited under the Chronically sick Headed Household category.

 

He elaborated that the PWAS assistance rendered to beneficiaries ranged from giving food, clothing, bedding items, soap as well as wheel chair repair.

 

He said that payments for education, medical and repatriation expenses were amongst other forms of assistance, adding that the department also rendered assistance towards victims of minor disasters.

 

Meanwhile, Chibefwe Ward Councillor Topson Kunda appealed to the District’s DMMU to seriously consider assistance for families whose houses and toilets had collapsed in Itala Compound.

 

Mr. Kunda said that at least 10 houses in Itala compound are reported to have collapsed during he week as result of heavy rainfall, adding that the number of toilets that have collapsed was even higher.
