Senior Chief Mwewa punishes 42 Subjects for failure to build toilets

Samfya, Feb 13/13, ZANIS——Senior Chief Mwewa of the Ng’umbo people in Samfya district of Luapula Province has punished 42 heads of households in his chiefdom for reluctance to comply with his directive to construct a toilet in order to promote sanitation.

Senior Chief Mwewa disclosed that he had planted sanitation inspectors from among his subjects who went round all the villages in his chiefdom and brought a list of those who defied his order that every household should have a toilet.

He said the 42 were punished in order to send a strong message so that others could learn and see the seriousness of the sanitation promotion exercise in his chiefdom, saying it was for their own benefit and collective public health.

The traditional leader observed that chiefs were critical players in championing issues of better practices in the promotion of sanitation programmes in their chiefdoms.

The Senior Chief said traditional leaders were better placed to promote sanitation issues because they were authority figures who also commanded a lot of respect from their subjects as all their subjects take their word.
