A POLICE officer has died on the spot after the vehicle he was driving in collided head-on with a Scania bus in Chinsali district of Muchinga Province.

Muchinga Province police commissioner, Remmy Kajoba, confirmed the accident in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.

Mr Kajoba said the accident involving a Hilux registration number ABX 3657 belonging to Armaguard, a security company which was returning from Mpika to deliver cash and was heading to Nakonde border.

The Hilux collided head-on with a Scania bus registration number AJB 2827 belonging to Power Tools which was enroute to Lusaka.

Mr Kajoba said a Nakonde-based police officer, identified as Kalema Chimpango, who was an escorting officer in the Hilux, died on the spot while the driver sustained serious injuries and is admitted to Chinsali District Hospital.

The accident happened at about 17:30 hours yesterday near Chipunga school along the Great North Road, 45 Km north of Chinsali district.

All the passengers on the bus escaped unhurt.

Muchinga Divisional Traffic Officer, Titus Hachisengele, said the bus driver, identified as John Kalumba, who has since been detained at Nambuluma police station, failed to keep to his near side, hence causing the accident.

Mr Hachisengele has since appealed to the motorists to drive with caution on the roads especially on bad spots so as to avoid causing accidents.
