Pedestrian run over on the Copperbelt

A pedestrian died on the spot on the Copperbelt after being hit by a speeding motor vehicle.

Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer, Elizabeth Kanjela, said in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the deceased sustained a bruised left arm and head injuries.

Ms Kanjela said the incident happened yesterday along Ndola – Kitwe dual carriage way around 17:00 hours

She said the motor vehicle, a Mitsubishi Challenger, registration number ALB 1287, was driven by Julius Tembo, aged 39, of house number 1071 Riverside, Solwezi, who escaped unhurt.

Ms Kanjela named the pedestrian as Justine Chibwe, 26, of Maposa East in Baluba, who sustained multiple body injuries and died on the spot and his body is lying in Thomson Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

She said the accident happened when the motor vehicle was being driven from east to west and upon reaching Simutenda area, could not stop due excessive speed before hitting the pedestrian who was crossing the road.
Ms Kanjela said the driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving contrary to Section167 of the Road Traffic Act no 11 of 2002.

Ms Kanjela said all the suspects will appear in court soon.
