GOVERNMENT has taken over the ownership of Roan Golf Club in Luanshya, which has been earmarked for sale by the receiver of the defunct Roan Antelope Mining Corporation (RAMCOZ).

With the takeover, the troubled golf club will now not be sold by RAMCOZ’s receiver, who had listed 53 properties in Luanshya for sale.

This should be a relief to the Luanshya golfers and indeed the entire golfing fraternity who were worried about the future of the club.

Sport and Youth Minister Chishimba Kambwili said in an interview yesterday that Roan would not be sold as it had been transferred to his ministry.

Kambwili said the ministry had mandated Luanshya Municipal Council to run the golf club on behalf of Government.

“Roan Golf Club will not be sold but has been transferred to my ministry. The club will be run by the council on behalf of Government,” Kambwili, who is Roan constituency member of Parliament, said.

He said he had already issued instructions to the council to take charge of the business at the club.

Kambwili said the club’s executive committee had also been dissolved and directed the Luanshya council to liaise with the Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) on naming a new management team.

The minister also said some of the other buildings on the list would also not be sold.

RAMCOZ’s receiver and administrator general’s office recently advertised the sale of several non-core assets which belonged to the defunct mine.

Roan Golf Club was being sold for KR2, 062, 000 (K2.062 billion) and interested buyers were expected to submit their bids before February 15.

Other properties for sale included Mpatamatu Sports Complex, Roan Social Club, Chaise Sports Complex, Muliashi Playing Ground, Kalulu Ground and Section 25 Clinic Playing Ground.
