Solwezi municipal council has started repairing faulty street lights along the Independence road which has been without lighting for some time now.

Council Public Relations Manager Chris Mulaliki told ZANIS that the council was spending KR 450,000.00 to replace 8 kilometres of an old underground cable with a new one.

Mr Mulaliki said the old cable was defective and this made the street lights not to switch on during the night.

He said the council wants all its urban roads to be lit at night as part of improving the road infrastructure for motorists and other users.

He said after working on the street lighting along the main Independence avenue, the council will move to installing street lights on all major urban roads which will soon be rehabilitated following government allocating KR 102 million to the local authority meant for roads.

He disclosed that so far government had released KR 20 million of the KR 102 million to enable the council start the road rehabilitation.
