RTSA to intensify road patrols

THE Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the Zambia police and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) to intensify motorised and foot patrols and arrest anybody who breaks the law during the festive period.

Ministry head of public relations Moses Suwali said traffic police officers in collaboration with RTSA will ensure that strategic roadblocks and check-points were mounted to enhance security and reduce on road carnage.

Mr Suwali cautioned members of the public to be mindful of their safety and security, that of other members of public as they celebrate the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

He observed that during the New Year celebrations, some people are thrilled by many activities, others choose to go on holiday while others opt to celebrate theirs in-doors.

“We advise motorists to observe traffic rules and to avoid driving while drunk or overspeeding to reduce on road carnage and loss of innocent lives.

Where possible, people should avoid driving during awkward hours,” he said.

Mr Suwali observed in a statement that most accidents being recorded were as a result of drink-driving or over speeding.

He appealed to motor ists to give attention to other road users and where possible stay with their families in-doors adding t

hat one of the greatest challenges during festive season was the high rate of road traffic accidents
