Mpulungu’s  Lunzuwa hydro power station to be ready by  September, 2014

Mpulungu,  May 10th, 2013, ZANIS —-  China National Electrical Engineering Company (CNEEC), the firm constructing the economically important Lunzuwa hydro power station in Mpulungu says the project would be completed by September next year.

Project manager Lin Hai says despite a few delays that were encountered initially, his company had developed 24 hours shifts to ensure that the project is completed on time.

ZANIS reports from Mpulungu that Mr. Hai said this when Northern Province minister Obvious Chisala visited the construction site of the power station , yesterday.

Mr. Hai said by April this year, the company had employed about 200 workers the majority of whom were Zambians.

He said the company had also put in place safety measures to ensure the safety of its employees.

Over 48 percent of the project had already been done. The biggest challenge the company was facing was the delay in the processing of Visas for the 80 Chinese nationals the company had engaged.

When completed Mpulungu District and the surrounding areas would have a consistent power supply for its various economic and social development needs.

And Mr. Chisala says government had attached great importance to the construction of Lunzuwa  hydro power station because of its economic value to the province.

He said government was also aware that when the power plant was completed, the power outages and load shedding experienced in many districts in the province would be a thing of the past.

Mr. Chisala promised to address the delay in the processing of Visas of Chinese nationals with the immigration department.

He said he was especially impressed and happy that the contractor had gone out of the way to introduce night shifts just so that the project was completed on schedule.

Earlier, Mr. Hai had also invited Mr. Chisala to the CNEEC headquarters in Beijing to see for himself what the company was doing.

He said CNEEC was also engaged to construct a US $ 1.2 billion power project in Nigeria and another thermal plant in Botswana among other major projects around the globe.

The Lunzuwa power plant is a ZESCO project which is being constructed at a cost of over US$ 54 million.
